Hi, Mama! This Winter I did a lot of baking and realized my vanilla extract wasn’t as pure as I thought it was. Facepalm. When the store fails me, I take it upon myself to make Homemade Vanilla Extract.

I’ve concluded that not everything is as it seems. Just because the packaging says natural, healthy, pure, or organic, doesn’t mean that is what your getting. Always flip the product around, read the ingredient list, and the product of origin.

If the information on the back doesn’t match the front put it back and find another brand or simply make it yourself.

Vanilla Extract

Vanilla extract is made by submerging vanilla pods into ethanol (alcohol) and water. It is considered an essential ingredient in many desserts, especially baked goods like cakes and cookies.

Artificial Vanilla Extract

Most artificial vanilla extracts are made up from a wood pulp by-product, It is then colored with caramel color to get the deep rich brown color real vanilla extract produces.

Some companies may even add unnecessary fillers to thin out the batch for mass production. Then artificial flavoring is then combined to the finished product to get the full vanilla experience.

Labeling Vanilla Extract

For vanilla to be labeled as pure is must contain 13.35% vanilla bean extract and 35% alcohol combined in distilled water. What’s not listed is the type of alcohol used to make the extract.

Most companies will use grain-based alcohols which can be detrimental to those with gluten allergies or intolerances. Another side note, most grain produced in the United States is genetically modified.

Ingredients

Time needed: 5 minutes.

How to Make Homemade Vanilla Extract

  1. Disinfect mason jar (along with lid and band) by submerging it in boiling water for 5 minutes.

    Carefully remove from water and let air dry.

  2. Place vanilla beans and one shot bourbon into the mason jar.

  3. Fill the rest of the jar up with vodka. Cover tightly and store in a dark, dry cabinet for 12 weeks.

  • After 12 weeks remove vanilla beans from jar and dry. Reuse them for your next batch

8 oz. Mason Jar

    Instructions

    1. Disinfect mason jar (along with lid and band) by submerging it in boiling water for 5 minutes. Carefully remove from water and let air dry.

    2. Place vanilla beans and one shot bourbon into the mason jar.
